Palisades Redux Screens

Privacy vs porosity…

For the Redux ADU, we designed operable aluminum screens that span the height of the front façade facing the main home on the lot. Utilizing technology and processes developed for public art projects, these laser-cut screens are designed using custom parametric software to produce moments of opacity and transparency in relation to the program of the ADU as seen from the backyard and adjacent home. This algorithm defined five gradient vectors to fine tune the location and size of openings with the most privacy in the bedroom and the largest openings near the ceiling for natural daylighting.

The screens are continuous, unbroken by floor plates allowing the ADU to be read as a monolithic sculptural object. At night they produce a lantern effect when viewed from outside the ADU, and in the day they produce complex shadows on the interior. Hinged upper panels provide access for maintenance while lower panels slide out of the way creating a seamless connection to the outdoors when open.
